What is the City Council?
Role of the Council
The city council members, elected as your representatives, form the decision-making body known as the city council, which is responsible for enacting ordinances, determining budgets, approving financial statements, and consenting to appointments on your behalf. For this reason, the city council is referred to as the "deliberative body." On the other hand, the mayor, elected by you as the representative who carries out the city's work, is responsible for the actual administration of city affairs. Therefore, the mayor is referred to as the "executive body." The "deliberative body" and the "executive body" are the two wheels that drive the city's operations forward. In advancing city administration, the city council and the mayor cooperate and operate appropriately from independent positions.
What is a City Council Member?
The City Council is composed of members elected by you through elections. Citizens who are 18 years or older, Japanese nationals, and have lived in the city for more than three months are eligible to vote for City Council members. Additionally, those who are 25 years or older are eligible to run for City Council. The number of council members is determined by ordinance in accordance with the provisions of the Local Autonomy Act. Currently, the number of council members in Inagi City is set at 22 by the city's ordinance.
The current council members were elected in the election on April 23, 2023, and took office on May 1, 2023. The term is set for 4 years.
What is the Inagi City Council Secretariat?
A secretariat is established to assist the activities of the city council. The secretariat helps with the operation of general meetings and committees, and prepares materials necessary for council activities. Additionally, it creates meeting minutes that record the discussions of general meetings and committees, and publishes a "City Council Newsletter" to inform citizens about the council's activities.
