Emergency Firefighting Assistance Team
Based on the lessons learned from the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, this unit was established in 1995 to enhance and strengthen the emergency response system from a national perspective during large-scale and special disasters, and was legislated through the amendment of the Fire Service Act in June 2003.
The Emergency Fire Assistance Team is a nationwide system of fire support activities where rescue teams and emergency teams belonging to fire departments across the country are pre-registered. In the event of large-scale or special disasters that cannot be handled by the local firefighting capabilities alone, they are dispatched at the request of the Commissioner of the Fire and Disaster Management Agency to conduct firefighting and rescue operations on-site.
