National Pension subscribers are divided into the following four categories, and the burden of premiums also varies.

Category 1 Insured Person

Self-employed individuals, students, agricultural, forestry, and fishery workers, and unemployed persons aged 20 to under 60 living in Japan (not classified as Category 2 or Category 3 insured persons). They will pay the insurance premiums themselves.

Category 2 Insured Person

Those who are enrolled in workplace pensions (Employee Pension) such as company employees and public servants.
Individuals under 20 years old or over 60 years old who join the Employees' Pension will become Category 2 insured persons under the National Pension.
The insurance premium is shared equally between the employer and the employee, and the employee's portion is deducted from their salary.

Category 3 Insured Person

Spouses who are dependents of Category 2 insured persons and are between the ages of 20 and 60.
The insurance premium is covered by the necessary costs of the employee pension that the spouse is enrolled in, so the individual does not need to pay the insurance premium.
In addition, the insurance premium for the spouse will not be increased as part of the insurance premium for Category 3 insured persons.

Voluntary Members from Age 60

If you are not eligible for benefits for 10 years even after turning 60, or if you want to increase your pension amount, you can voluntarily join the National Pension until you turn 65.
In addition, those born before April 1, 1965, who do not meet the pension eligibility period even at the age of 65, can voluntarily join under special provisions until they meet the eligibility period by the age of 70.
