Voluntary Enrollment System
Voluntary Enrollment from Age 60
The enrollment period for the National Pension is from age 20 to under 60.
However, if you do not meet the 10-year qualification period even after turning 60, or if you want to increase your Pension amount even slightly (you cannot exceed the full amount), you can continue to contribute until you turn 65.
For individuals aged 60 and over, the payment of insurance premiums will generally be made via direct debit from a savings account.
Optional Enrollment Exception
Those born on or before April 1, 1975, who do not meet the Pension eligibility period even after turning 65, can voluntarily enroll until they fulfill the eligibility period, up to the age of 70.
Voluntary Enrollment for Those Moving Abroad
Individuals with Japanese nationality aged 20 to under 65 can voluntarily enroll in the National Pension even if they move overseas.
Those who wish to join voluntarily should have a domestic collaborator, such as a parent or sibling in Japan, to assist with the necessary procedures through the domestic collaborator.
If there are no domestic collaborators, please directly proceed with the procedures by mailing to the Pension Office that has jurisdiction over the person's last address in Japan.
Note: Voluntary enrollees are not eligible for the special payment system for students or the premium exemption system.
