The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is promoting the installation of "Bicycle Navigation Marks" on the left side of the roadway to encourage safe bicycle passage.

Inagi City Hall will gradually install these "Bicycle Navigation Marks" on main roads within the city and routes connecting main roads, in consultation with the Tama Central Police Station.
On roads where this bicycle navigation mark is installed, it helps prevent bicycles from going the wrong way.

Meaning of Bicycle Navigation Mark

  • The part where bicycles should pass and the direction they should proceed are clearly indicated.
  • Please proceed in the direction of the arrow with your bicycle. (Going against the direction is not allowed.)

Note: This indication is not specified by law, and this indication itself does not designate a new method of traffic. (Traffic methods must comply with legal regulations or traffic signs, etc.)

Points to Note When Using Roads with Bicycle Navigation Marks

The "Bicycle Navigation Mark" does not imply "Bicycle Priority" or similar meanings.
Even when traveling on roads where "Bicycle Navigation Marks" are installed, please pay close attention to cars and pedestrians.
Also, when avoiding parked or stopped vehicles on the street, please ensure your safety by checking for vehicles approaching from behind.

When bicycles can use the sidewalk

Sign

Regardless of the presence of "Bicycle Navigation Marks," bicycles are generally required to travel on the roadway.
However, in the following cases, it is stipulated by the Road Traffic Act that pedestrians may use the sidewalk.

  • When the sign "Bicycles Allowed on Sidewalk" is installed (in case the sign on the right is present)
  • When individuals under 13 years old or over 70 years old ride a bicycle (including elementary school students and Older Adults)
  • When people with physical disabilities ride a bicycle
  • When it is unavoidable to walk on the sidewalk for safety (in cases of road construction or when there are parked vehicles on the roadway, posing a danger)

Points to Note When Running on Sidewalks

Sidewalks prioritize pedestrians, and bicycle use on sidewalks is only exceptionally permitted.
When riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, please travel "slowly" and "close to the roadway."
If there are many pedestrians on the sidewalk or if you might obstruct pedestrian traffic, please get off your bicycle and walk while pushing it.
If pedestrians are not aware of your bicycle, instead of ringing the bell, try saying "Excuse me, passing through."
