Notice Regarding Vaccination for Shingles Prevention in Older Adults (Routine Vaccination)

Subsidies for FY2025 vaccination recipients ended on March 31, 2026.

Depending on the vaccine administered, it generally takes two months to complete the two-dose vaccination series. Those eligible who wish to be vaccinated are advised to get vaccinated early.

Eligible Persons (FY2024)

Those who are registered as residents of Inagi City on the vaccination date and have never received a Vaccination for shingles in the past, and meet the criteria below

(1) Those who will turn 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, or 100 years old in the relevant fiscal year

Note: Those aged 101 and over were only eligible in FY2025.

(2) As of the vaccination date, individuals aged 60 to under 65 who have a disability that severely impairs their immune function to the extent that daily life is almost impossible due to the human immunodeficiency virus.

Note: Those who have already received one dose of live vaccine (Biken) or two doses of inactivated vaccine (Shingrix) are not eligible for assistance. However, those who have only received one dose of the inactivated vaccine (Shingrix) are eligible for assistance for the remaining doses.

Note: The subsidy for vaccination costs is available only once in a lifetime, so those who wish to be vaccinated should be careful not to miss the opportunity within the eligible fiscal year.

Note: For the five years from fiscal year 2025 to fiscal year 2029, the eligible age groups will be in five-year increments due to transitional measures, and from fiscal year 2030 onwards, only those who are 65 years old at the time of vaccination will be eligible.

About Individual Notifications

To inform those eligible for vaccination in FY2026, a notice (postcard) will be sent to the eligible individuals around June 2026.

Vaccination Location

Individual vaccinations will be conducted at designated medical institutions in the city. Please check in advance as some medical institutions may require reservations.
Note: If you wish to receive vaccinations at a medical institution outside the city, you must apply in advance, so please contact the Inagi City Health Center.

Number of vaccinations

(1) For live vaccines (Biken), inject subcutaneously once.

(2) In the case of inactivated vaccine (Shingrix), two doses are administered intramuscularly with an interval of at least 2 months, typically 2 months apart. Note: There are 1 and 2.

Note: 1 Even if this method cannot be taken, it is desirable to complete the second vaccination within 6 months of the first vaccination.

Note: 2 In the case of individuals who are immunocompromised due to illness or treatment, those with reduced immune function, or those who may have a reduced immune function, if a physician determines that early vaccination is necessary, it is acceptable to administer the inactivated vaccine (Shingrix) intramuscularly in two doses with an interval of more than one month.

Fee (This is the amount that has already been subsidized.)

(1) In the case of live vaccines (Biken): General 4,000 yen (completed in one dose)

(2) In the case of inactivated vaccine (Shingrix): 10,000 yen per general dose (completed with 2 doses)

Note: For both (1) and (2), households receiving Public Assistance should bring the "Public Assistance Certificate" to the medical institution, and those who are former Japanese residents in China should bring the "Support Benefit Certificate". In these cases, all expenses will be covered by public funds (free of charge).

Belongings

Identification documents (such as My Number Card), for those who have received one dose of the inactivated vaccine, something that shows the vaccination history, and for eligible persons (2), a Physical Disability Certificate or a copy of a doctor's medical certificate

Note: The pre-examination questionnaire is distributed at the Inagi City Health Center and designated medical institutions.

Those who cannot receive the vaccination

The following individuals are not eligible to receive the vaccination.

• Those who have experienced anaphylaxis due to the components of this vaccination solution
• Others who are deemed by a doctor to be in a condition unsuitable for vaccination

Additionally, you will not be able to receive the vaccination in the following cases, so please wait until you have recovered to receive it.

• Fever
• Suffering from a severe acute illness

If you wish to receive a live vaccine, in addition to the above, individuals with weakened immunity due to illness or treatment cannot be vaccinated.

People who need to be cautious about vaccination

The following individuals should consult a doctor in advance as caution is required for vaccination.

• Individuals with underlying conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, liver diseases, and blood disorders.
• Those who have experienced allergic symptoms such as fever or a rash all over the body within 2 days of receiving a vaccination
• Those who have experienced seizures
• Those diagnosed with immunodeficiency or those with close relatives who have congenital immunodeficiency
• Individuals who may have an allergy to the components of the shingles vaccine (live vaccine, inactivated vaccine)
• If you wish to receive a live vaccine, please wait at least 3 months after receiving a blood transfusion or gamma globulin injection, and at least 6 months after undergoing high-dose gamma globulin therapy before getting vaccinated.
• If you wish to receive an inactivated vaccine, those with thrombocytopenia, coagulation disorders, or those undergoing anticoagulant therapy should exercise caution.
