Professor Lecture Series "There is History in the Jizo by the Roadside: Exploring Iwafune Jizo"

In 1719 (the 4th year of the Kyōhō era), during the mid-Edo period, people in the villages of the Tama Hills actively sent Jizō statues on boats to neighboring villages while dancing joyfully and colorfully. This practice was observed not only in the Tama Hills but also across a wide area from western Kanto to the Chubu region. By tracing the written materials left in various places and the stone Jizō statues established at that time, we clarify the aspects of this trend and consider its historical significance.
