Professor Course: "Cross-Cultural Communication with International Students"

 In this course, we will learn about intercultural adaptability and explain the knowledge and skills needed to interact with individuals from diverse cultures and languages. Based on the theories and examples of "intercultural communication," the aim is to acquire practical global skills through discussions with international students.

Content of Each Session
1st April 20 What is intercultural communication?
Learn communication indicators and concepts to understand and capture different cultures from a multifaceted perspective, and provide explanations on the "measuring stick of comparison" between your own culture and different cultures.
2nd May 18 Culture Shock, Stereotypes, and Cross-Cultural Adaptation
This explains why misunderstandings and friction occur when Japanese people interact with people from different cultures, as well as how to respond and adapt to these situations.
3rd May 18 High-context and low-context cultures
This explains the differences in communication styles between Japan and other countries based on the two keywords "high-context" and "low-context".
4th June 15 Language Communication
We will learn about the language skills that are important for intercultural communication, particularly by introducing examples such as "refusal," "request," and "apology."
5th July 20 Non-verbal Communication
I will talk about situations and issues where differences in non-verbal communication styles clearly manifest in the mechanisms of intercultural understanding.
6th September 21 Comprehensive Skills in Intercultural Communication
Based on the indicators and concepts of intercultural understanding explained in this course, you will learn how to respond to target countries and individual events, in other words, the "methods of intercultural adaptation."

Each class is 90 minutes long.

May 18 will have two sessions held in one day.
