In Inagi City, the leading cause of death is "cancer," with about 1 in 3 people dying from "cancer." In light of this, we provide information on cancer measures to help individuals create and protect their own health. Please make use of this in your daily life.

What is cancer?

The official name is "malignant tumor," and it is also called "malignant neoplasm." "Cancer" is a disease that originates from within our bodies and disrupts the function of normal cells. It is said that about 1 in 2 Japanese people will develop "cancer," making it a very familiar disease to us.

Occurrence of Cancer

Our bodies undergo cell division every day to grow. During this process, if a mistake damages the genes, "cancer cells" are formed.
Most of them are eliminated by the natural function of genes and the immune system, but occasionally some are overlooked. Such cancer cells grow larger by hijacking nutrients from normal cells.
Cancer symptoms and treatments vary depending on the affected area.
The National Cancer Center's website provides detailed explanations about each type of cancer.

Causes of Cancer

More than half of the causes of cancer are said to be due to unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, obesity from lack of exercise, and poor dietary choices. On the other hand, it is said that about 60% of cancers can be prevented by improving lifestyle habits. However, it is important to note that cancer can also be caused by viruses or bacteria, as well as genetic factors inherited from parents.

Cancer Prevention

According to the "New 12 Principles for Cancer Prevention," there are 12 ways to prevent cancer. Let's be mindful of our daily habits and aim to build a body that is less susceptible to cancer.

Let's get cancer screening!

Let's undergo cancer screenings regularly. By having cancer screenings regularly when you are healthy and without any symptoms, you can detect cancer early. Early-stage cancer has a higher chance of being cured with treatment.
The cancer screenings conducted by the city are proactive screenings aimed at reducing cancer mortality rates. Accordingly, the target participants for the city's cancer screenings are those without any subjective symptoms. If you have pain or any symptoms, please visit an outpatient clinic under medical insurance instead of undergoing the screening.

For those who have been determined to require detailed examination in cancer screening

Health screenings are conducted for early detection and early treatment.
If you are advised to undergo a detailed examination to detect early-stage cancer or other diseases, be sure to have the detailed examination. Even if you are judged to require a detailed examination, many cases result in no abnormalities being found. Additionally, if cancer is detected, early treatment increases the cure rate, and the earlier the stage, the lower the treatment costs and physical burden.

Basis for Cancer Screening Implementation

The city's cancer screening is conducted based on the Health Promotion Act, targeting individuals without subjective symptoms with the aim of reducing cancer mortality rates.
In addition, the content of the screenings, the screening intervals, and the target age groups are all implemented based on scientific evidence, using methods known to significantly reduce cancer mortality rates.
