QuestionWhat is an additional insurance premium?

Response

This is a pension that is paid in addition to the basic old-age pension for Category 1 insured persons.
First category insured persons who are not enrolled in the National Pension Fund can pay an additional premium along with their fixed insurance premium.
The additional insurance premium is 400 yen (monthly), with 200 yen added to the pension amount.
For example, if you pay additional insurance premiums for 40 years, the pension amount will increase by 200 yen × 12 months × 40 years, totaling 96,000 yen.
To apply for additional pension, please bring your identification documents (My Number Card, driver's license, etc.) and your basic pension number notification or pension book to the Insurance and Pension Division.

Note: You can submit electronic applications for procedures from the My Number Portal.

For more details, please check the Japan Pension Service website.
